The Episcopal Conference of Malawi (ECM) and Evangelical Association of Malawi (EAM) have reiterated the need to protect life and family hence the need to protect unborn children and say no to abortion as perpetrated by those campaigning for the legalisation of the killing of unborn children and homosexuality.
This was said during a Press Conference at Catholic Secretariat in Lilongwe on Wednesday as part of commemoration of the Citizen March for Life and Family which was held on December 6, last year with the theme ‘Lighting the Candle’.

During the march Christians from the two mother bodies in all the major cities and districts in Malawi went to the streets to denounce the passing of the abortion and homosexuality bill. In Lilongwe, the petition was successfully presented to the national assembly.
According to ECM Secretary General, Fr. Henry Saindi, ECM and EAM reaffirms that from the moment of conception, a life begins that is neither of the father nor of the mother, it is rather the life of a new human being.
He said human life is sacred, a fundamental value, and created in the image and likeness of God hence human life must be protected, safeguarded and preserved with extreme care from conception.
“The measure of every society is whether it threatens or enhances the life and dignity of the human person. Right to life is the first amongst all human rights. The right to life of the unborn child takes precedence over the right of a woman to control her body and as a result to procure abortion,” reads part of the statement that was co-signed by both Fr. Saindi and Rev. Francis Mkandawire, General Secretary for EAM.
Fr Saindi further said all direct abortions, deliberate killings of an innocent human being are gravely evil and immoral.
He also said sex and marriage are naturally between a man and a woman and the union of man and woman is the naturally ideal and complete basic unit of a society.
“The destruction of the natural family, that of a man and woman is the ultimate destruction of the human society. Therefore, we all have the collective obligation to preserve, promote and defend life and the family and make known to all people the laws of God,” he said.
Both ECM and EAM have appealed to the conscience of Members of Parliament to always remember that their first and foremost duty is to pass laws which are in tandem with the culture, beliefs and values of Malawians.
During the Press Conference, ECM and EAM also announced the twenty resolutions that have come out from the just ended World Congress of Families, African Regional Conference which was held at Sunbird Capital Hotel in Lilongwe from 29th-30th November.
Among the resolutions include; exposing and fighting against the evil of multiple dimensions of sex revolution and the devastation is has caused on the family, and strengthening collaboration nationally, regionally and globally through local structures that will ensure continued momentum of life and family agenda.
